Kiss star

Named for the shape of his mouth, the mole star is especially widespread in North America. It is part of the family of moles, but is the only of its kind to have a muzzle with a form so original. With tentacles, in fact, that branch off below the nose can detect the exact location of its prey


slightly larger than a mouse, the mole stellata (Condylura cristata) has his mouth covered with about 22 tentacles. Being blind can hunt underground and underwater thanks a questi prolungamenti.
Si nutre principalmente di molluschi e insetti che mastica grazie ai 44 denti che incorniciano l’entrata della bocca.
La sua lunga coda è usata come riserva di grasso durante la stagione dell’accoppiamento. Ha una pelliccia nerastra e idro-repellente mentre le zampe grandi e squamose le permettono di scavare tunnel. Si pensava inizialmente che i suoi tentacoli fossero appiattiti sul muso e che poi, durante l’evoluzione, avrebbero preso la forma attuale.
